Credentials
Advanced restorative and cosmetic dentistry requires hundreds of hours of post-graduate training. Most patients are surprised to learn that the majority of dental schools do not teach any courses in cosmetic or advanced restorative dentistry, and the few that do are usually limited to introductory courses. Gifted with an artistic eye, a rigorous program of post-graduate training, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Dr. Hollar has become one of the most highly trained and most credentialed dentists in the world today. Her accomplishments are many, including being the only dentist in the world to be an Accredited Fellow by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and to be recognized as a Pankey Scholar. In 2012 Susan was inducted into the American Academy of Esthetic Dentisty, http://www.estheticacademy.org/. This is a unique organization comprised of distinguished individuals from virtually every facet of the dental profession. Members are educators who share a common interest in esthetics and excellence in the quality of patient care. Some of them are dedicated to academics full-time, while others are involved in continuing education, research and development. This diverse, multidisciplinary group meets once each year to share ideas and learn from one another. It is a collegial and friendly atmosphere underscored by mutual respect and admiration.
Dr. Hollar received much of her post-graduate training with the L. D. Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida, starting in 1984. The L. D. Pankey Institute was founded by followers of Dr. L. D. Pankey, one of the greatest restorative dentists of all time. Dr. Hollar now serves as a lead faculty member with the Institute, teaching dentists the foundations for the proper engineering and mechanics of the bite and the principles of smile design. In 2007, Dr. Hollar was awarded the prestigious title of Pankey Scholar, one of only 43 dentists in the world to receive this award, the highest honor bestowed by the Pankey Institute. In 2012 she was awarded Accredited Fellow status by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

The AACD Connection
Dr. Hollar was the first female dentist in the State of Texas to be accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Founded in 1984, the AACD is the world’s largest organization devoted to the science and art of cosmetic dentistry with over 7,000 members in the U.S. and 40 countries around the world. In administering the leading accreditation program for cosmetic dentistry, the AACD requires dentists to attend a number of continuing education courses, undergo rigorous testing, and submit a number of case studies to be judged by a prestigious panel of cosmetic dentistry experts. Today there are only 320 accredited members of the AACD.
In 2012 she was awarded Accredited Fellowship status, an achievement held by fewer than fifty dentists in the world and by the first female dentist in the State of Texas. Fellowship is the highest level of achievement available to AACD members, whose purpose is to provide an additional level of achievement for members in accordance with the AACD’s mission of education and excellence. This is the highest level of award given by the AACD. (See www.AACD.com for further information).
Dr. Hollar is an examiner for the AACD and serves as a board member. She is a past contributing editor and has written numerous articles for the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, the flagship publication of the AACD.
The Pankey Connection
Founded in 1972, The Pankey Institute is a nonprofit organization in Key Biscayne, Florida that promotes optimal oral health care through advanced continuing education for dentists (www.pankey.org). It was the first institute of its kind and remains among the most prestigious, attracting dentists from 42 nations to its educational programs. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 dentists and specialists have attended L. D. Pankey courses, and they now serve millions of patients worldwide.
The Pankey Institute is named in honor of the legendary Dr. L. D. Pankey, an early pioneer and leader in advanced restorative dentistry. Dr. Pankey taught hundreds of dentists while maintaining a private practice in Coral Gables, Florida for over 40 years. He continued to lecture at The Pankey Institute until his death in 1999 at the age of 98.
Dr. Hollar became a student at The Pankey Institute in 1984 and completed the entire continuum of courses in 1999. In 2001, she became a member of the visiting faculty, and each year she generously donates her time and energy by lecturing and teaching other students the art of optimal dentistry. She currently is a lead faculty member for the aesthetic continuum offered at the Institute.
In 2007, Dr. Hollar became one of only 37 dentists in the world to become a Pankey Scholar. A Pankey Scholar is a dentist who has made a determined effort to rise to the highest level of her or his capability. These highly accomplished individuals have demonstrated their levels of understanding and implementation of their training, and have been shown to possess excellent clinical, behavioral, and managerial skills. They are continual students and learners who will settle for nothing less than their best effort for the benefit of those patients who seek their services.
Pankey-Trained dentists are challenged to:
Know themselves and their patients,
Know their work,
Keep abreast of emerging technology and knowledge,
Master these to the absolute best of their ability and Help patients make appropriate choices to achieve comprehensive treatment both functionally and esthetically.
Pankey-Trained dentists are taught how to:
Treat their patients as individuals
Do complete and thorough examinations
Take enough time to listen and answer questions fully and
Create a practice that reflects their own personal values.
Complete understanding of advanced occlusal and esthetic principals help the Pankey-trained dentist offer optimal care to their patients. The goal is to help create and maintain long-lasting comfort, function, and naturally beautiful teeth.
One of Dr. Hollar’s greatest mementos of The Pankey Institute is a hand-written letter from L. D. Pankey to one of his “new young students.” Note the date of July 4th, 1986 at the bottom of the letter.
